Dyslexia

The Ohio General Assembly enacted legislation on April 12, 2021, addressing the screening and intervention for children with dyslexia. As of the 2023-2024 school year, Ohio schools must conduct dyslexia screenings for all students in grades K-3. NRCS (North Ridgeville City Schools) will perform screenings for students in grades K-3 during the winter benchmark period in January, utilizing our Tier 1 screener, Aimsweb.

Following the screening, the results of the Tier 1 assessment will be communicated to parents, accompanied by a letter explaining the results and outlining the subsequent steps. The dyslexia screening process aligns with guidelines set forth in the dyslexia guidebook established by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. North Ridgeville City Schools will adhere to Ohio's dyslexia support laws and adopt the state's definition of dyslexia, which characterizes it as "a specific learning disorder that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by unexpected difficulties with accurate or fluent word recognition, along with poor spelling and decoding abilities that are not consistent with the individual's intelligence, motivation, and sensory capabilities. These difficulties typically stem from a deficit in the phonological component of language."
